Punjab Medical Education and Research Minister O.P. Soni today approved the drawings of new government medical colleges being set up in the state. Presiding over the meeting attended by Principal Secretary Medical Education and Research Mr. D.K. Tewari, Chief Architect Punjab Sapna and senior officials of PWD, Mr. Soni directed the Public Works Department to start the tendering process for construction of these colleges in next two weeks. He sets the target to complete these buildings in next one and half years.
Mr. Soni said that these medical colleges to be constructed at approximate cost of Rs. 1500 crore would be based on the latest design and technology. ”After the commencement of classes in these colleges, the state would able to get services of additional 300 doctors every year,” he added.
During the meeting, Chief Architect Punjab presented drawings of buildings of Medical Colleges being set up in Mohali, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur. She said that Government Medical College Mohali was being set up on about 24.76 acres of land in which Medical College Block would have nine storeys. The college has separate hostels for boys and girls as well as various departments and OPDs. Parking space will be set up in accordance with the rules of National Medical Council (NMC). Apart from this accommodation, guest house, indoor sports facility would also be provided for the professors and other teaching staff. She said that this college has been designed in such a way that in future if the number of student seats increases then the building would be extended as per the requirement.
Chief Architecture further said that Medical College Kapurthala would be constructed on 21.4 acres with a seven storied medical college building and an eight storied building of Hospital building. The entire structure will be developed as per the terms of the NMC. She said that Government Medical College Hoshiarpur would have seven storey college block and nine storey hospital block on about 23 acres of land. In addition, all other facilities will develop as per NMC norms and guidelines.
