The United States wants to see a peaceful and stable Bangladesh committed to democracy, transparency, pluralism, good governance, and respect for human rights. Outlining the key objectives of the US relationship with Bangladesh, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas said that it looks for a socially and environmentally resilient Bangladesh.
Addressing the International Business Forum of Bangladesh in Dhaka on Tuesday, Ambassador Haas said that US and Bangladesh can go the farthest and fastest on economic issues as the US is the largest Foreign Director Investor (FDI) and its largest export destination. In this context, he announced that the US Embassy in Dhaka will have its first full-time Commercial attaché soon.
Ambassador Haas said that Bangladesh is a great macroeconomic story being among the fastest growing economies in the world over the past decade. Being the 8th most populous country in the world, Bangladesh presents a growing market for investors. It is also poised to take advantage of the demographic dividend with a young and increasingly well-educated young workforce.
However, to attract more investment in the country, Bangladesh needs to ensure security as political violence and electoral instability scare investors. The companies also want laws that are consistently enforced and a legal system that can act quickly and settle disputes fairly, said Ambassador Haas.
