After recording a downward trend for several days, Bangladesh has recorded a spike in fresh Corona cases and number of deaths.

According to the latest figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) 37 people died due to Corona while 1608 new cases of infection were also detected on Wednesday The sample positivity rate was reported at 7.83 percent and recovery rate at 92.65 percent.

Bangladesh had reported lower figures for both infection and death over the last many days. Starting with 22 deaths and 262 infections on 15 May, the country reported 30 deaths and 1272 deaths on Tuesday, 18 May.

The spike comes in the wake of a huge number of people travelling out of Dhaka to their native towns and villages for the Eid vacations and returning back. According to figures given out by mobile phone operators somewhere between 6.5 million to 10 million people left Dhaka for the Eid festiva. The inflow back into the capital city is still continuing. Health experts had expressed apprehension of a sudden rise in COVID 19 infections due to the huge rush of outbound and inbound people during this period.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said on Tuesday that Bangladesh will receive over 1 lakh doses of Pfizer vaccine by June 2 from the COVAX scheme led by the WHO. Earlier, China had provided 5 lakh doses of the vaccine to Bangladesh as a gift. Bangladesh is also negotiating a deal with China and Russia to get the COVID 19 vaccine after supply from Serum Institute of India (SII) was interrupted due to sudden spike in COVID 19 cases in India and consequent high domestic demand for vaccines.
